Think like a dish pig

My youngest has just become a ‘dish pig.’ He wanted more money and more freedom and the only way to get that was to find a job. He now washes dishes in a local restaurant on a Saturday night. In the process he had to find his tax file number, which had been previously organised though his school, but since then had disappeared.

He went to visit Google and searched ‘what must I do if I lost my Tax file number.’ The problem was of course easily solved with a phone call to the ATO.

The point of this story is that; this is an example of how people approach problem solving. He is a smart (enough) kid, but the default setting is NOT to think, it is to use the computer as an extended brain.

On a serious note, this has major implications for all organisations, but in particular for institutions of learning...
